Listen to the Silence

In a world that is only getting busier and noisier, we are surrounded by sounds that compete for our attention. When we turn off the noise and really listen, we might be surprised at what we hear. We may even learn something new about ourselves!

This thoughtful picture book uses images and a story told in rhyme to show that some of the most important messages of all can be found when we take the time to listen to the silence.

“Listen to the Silence is more than just a book. It feels like an invitation to slow down and notice the beauty we often miss in the middle of everyday life. What I love most is how naturally the writing and artwork flow together, speaking straight to the heart. I feel my blood pressure dropping as I read this beautiful story.” -Full-time Christian worker

Listen to the Silence is an invitation to children and their adults to slow down, to breathe deeply, and to notice the beauty of the world around them. In this fast-paced life, we often miss the simple joys found in nature and in reconnection to our surroundings. The book is a reminder to lift our heads three inches from screens to the scenes all around us, and in doing so to hear the still, small voice of the Creator.

This book is lovely in both words and art. It summons every reader (even adults) to pause and pay attention to the world around them. In this age of tablets and screens, it’s a guide to help others listen to the world and the thoughts that occupy our minds. It bids us to remember this lovely world. It is inviting and grants “permission” to just “be.”

I got this for my granddaughter who is almost 1 year old. I can’t wait til she sits in my lap and lets me read to her! I think the one thing we don’t teach our children is to listen to the silence. I think in our joy and enthusiasm we don’t teach them to treasure the time that the quiet brings into our life. I actually think it took me long time as a rambunctious child and adult to learn this myself. I encourage you to get one of these books to share the one valuable thing that is often so hard to teach

What happens when a lifelong committed contemplative puts verses and images together to disclose the secrets and satisfactions of regular seasons of silence? It’s called Listen to the Silence by Marjean Brooks. The best children’s books connect with all ages. This beautifully illustrated children’s book adorned with the lyric of poetry is a stunning example of this literary craft. Peace and perspective flow from the practice of being still and listening to the music, the mystery, and the messages of articulate silence. No one is too young to be introduced to this soul refreshing exercise. May this little book woo you and your children into the deeper joys of the ancient practice of meditation and its companion discipline of silence.

What a lovely book! The title and story remind us to be still and enjoy the silence.
The illustrations are beautiful and it is a wonderful gift for children of all ages.

In God’s wonderful timing in His grand redemption story, He has so ordained the publication of this book at the time it seems like we need it the most! This book is geared towards children, but I believe that the adults reading it to them get MUCH out of it! This is a captivating reminder that, “the whole earth is filled with his glory” as each page encourages us to remember the weightiness of God’s being and how he communicates in overwhelming ways in the silence of looking at the stars, or standing on the seashore, or in the daily viewing of the beautiful sun. Children need this book as a firm foundation to understand God’s beauty in creation and how he speaks to us about who He is and what He is like— and what he wants us to do! It accords with what my sage grandmother told me since I was a child, “Be sure to make time every day to think!” – and I love this book because I get to tell my children the same message through reading it to them!
