Ask Your Audience One Meaningful Question
It’s Monday, and last week we talked about the power of vulnerability and sharing honest moments from your journey.
But meaningful connection doesn’t happen through sharing alone. It also happens through listening.
One of the biggest mistakes authors make is feeling like they always need to be teaching, posting, encouraging, explaining, or promoting. But sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is pause long enough to invite someone else into the conversation. Because people don’t just want to be spoken to. They want to feel seen, heard, and understood. And often, one thoughtful question can open the door to a much deeper connection with your readers.
This Week’s Focus:
Ask your audience one meaningful question.
Why This Matters
Connection is about so much more than what you say. It’s also about creating space for people to respond.
A thoughtful question helps your reader pause, reflect, and engage. And just as important … it helps you better understand the hearts of the people you’re trying to serve.
Sometimes authors struggle to know what readers need most, and this is one of the simplest ways to find out.
Important note: If you’re not active on social media, this tip still absolutely applies to you. You can ask meaningful questions through:
-
your email list
-
conversations with readers
-
your author newsletter
-
a small group or Bible study
-
speaking events
-
text messages
-
your Facebook group or online community
-
even personal replies to readers
The goal is not simply “engagement,” the goal is connection. And meaningful connection can happen anywhere people have the opportunity to respond, share, and feel heard.
What to Do This Week
Write a short post or email that: #1 shares a brief thought, story, or encouragement; #2 ends with one meaningful question
Not a surface-level question. Not something people can answer with one word. Ask something that invites honesty.
Here’s some question ideas to borrow, or to get your creative juices flowing:
-
“What’s been weighing on your heart lately?”
-
“Where have you been struggling to trust God?”
-
“What’s something you’ve been wrestling with lately?”
-
“Where have you seen God show up recently … even in a small way?”
-
“What’s one truth you’ve needed to remind yourself of lately?”
Example:
Sometimes the hardest seasons are the ones no one else sees. The quiet ones where you’re still showing up… but it feels heavy.
Can I ask you something?
What’s been weighing on your heart lately?”
One Small Step
Post your question… and then stay present.
Respond, and acknowledge people. Listen well!
You don’t need to have all the answers. Sometimes people simply need to know someone cares enough to ask.
Here’s a question for you…
