A Modern-Day Story That Reads Like the Book of Acts with the PREM Team
What does it look like to follow Jesus when obedience could cost you your freedom, your family, or even your life?
In this episode of At This Table, Shelly Brown and co-host Heather Rider are joined by Cynthia Finley, Ellen Gray Maybank, and Jeanette Tiwari for a remarkable conversation about PREM: An Apostle’s Triumphant Witness for Christ in Nepal.
Prem Pradhan was a Hindu soldier who came to Christ and eventually returned to Nepal to share the gospel with his own people. His obedience led to years of imprisonment, persecution, and suffering—but also to extraordinary joy, powerful witness, and lives changed for eternity. As Cynthia shares, Prem spent a total of ten years in fourteen different prisons, where even his confinement became an unexpected place of ministry.
This conversation also tells the story behind the story. After author Robert V. Finley died, his widow Cynthia discovered the unfinished manuscript in their basement. What followed was a years-long process of preserving Bob’s voice, piecing together decades of interviews and research, and bringing Prem’s story to publication with the help of Ellen and Jeanette.
Together Shelly, Heather and the PREM team talk about:
• the cost of willing obedience
• why Prem’s story feels so much like the book of Acts
• how joy became a powerful witness in the middle of suffering
• the unforgettable moment Prem realized that Jesus was not only the One who suffered for him, but the One who was with him in his suffering
• why this story still matters for believers today
• and why preserving stories of God’s faithfulness matters for future generations
One of the most powerful takeaways from this episode is simple: God does not ask everyone to do the same thing, but He does ask each of us to say yes to what He places before us. Jeanette describes it as willing obedience—a thread that runs through Prem’s life and this entire conversation.
If you’ve ever wondered whether God can use hardship, weakness, waiting, or circumstances you would never choose, this conversation will remind you that He can—and often does—in ways far beyond what we can see in the moment.
