Identify Your Reader’s “Right Now” Struggle

Last week, we started with clarity—putting words around the transformation your message offers.

This week, we take one step closer to your reader.

Because even a clear message can feel distant if it doesn’t connect to what someone is walking through right now.

Many authors carry a powerful message but struggle to express it in a way that’s easy for others to understand.

And when the message feels unclear … it becomes harder for readers to recognize that the book is for them.

This Week’s Author Growth Tip: Identify Your Reader’s “Right Now” Struggle

Before someone is ready for transformation, they’re living in a moment.

A real situation.
A real tension.
A real question they may not even know how to put into words.

That’s where the connection begins.

What to Do This Week

Keep this simple.

Think of one specific reader and answer this: What is your reader dealing with right now?

Not in general. Not long-term. Right now.

To help you get there, complete this sentence: “She’s in a season where _____________________.”

Then go one step deeper:

  • What is weighing on her?
  • What is she thinking about when she can’t sleep?
  • What is she quietly asking God?

Write your answer in 2–3 sentences, like you’re describing a real person.

Example: She’s in a season where she feels overwhelmed trying to hold everything together—her responsibilities, her relationships, and her faith. She’s doing all the right things, but inside she feels tired and unsure if she’s enough.

Why This Matters

Readers often go searching for a book…but what they’re really looking for is relief, understanding, or hope in the middle of what they’re facing.

When your message meets them there … they lean in.

One Small Step

You don’t need to solve everything this week. Just take the time to truly understand where your reader is. That’s where meaningful connection begins.

Just one simple step. Done faithfully, it makes a difference.

Hit reply and tell us “what is your reader walking through right now?” Just a few sentences.

Cheering you on,
Shelly, Athena & Carol

P.S. If this exercise helped you see your reader more clearly, imagine what it would look like to have guidance like this every week—with support to actually apply it.
