Reframing Rejection: How Looking through a Different Lens Changes Everything

About The Book

Do you struggle to overcome rejection? Does it seem like no matter what you do, rejection still happens? You twist this way and that, trying to please your boss, friends, and family. Insecurity grips your heart because you wonder if rejection is inevitable. But what if we could move from a place of fearing it to overcoming it?

This was the question Jessica Van Roekel asked when she came awake to the consequences of striving for a rejection-proof life. Instead of living in God’s freedom, she lived trapped in people pleasing, perfectionism, and control. Through poignant and personal stories, Jessica takes you through the journey of reframing rejection so that you might live free from rejection’s tyranny.

Reading Reframing Rejection will equip and empower you to identify four different rejection categories; discover four lenses to frame rejection experiences in and break unhealthy cycles; face rejection with hope that God has a purpose for you; remove the yoke of living for other people’s approval; experience the exhilarating sufficiency of Jesus; engage with God through the “Reflect,” “Reframe,” and “Renew” portions of each chapter.

Reframing Rejection will lead you to freedom, healing, and peace as you discover the joy of walking in the fullness of who God created you to be.

About The Author

Jessica Van Roekel

Jessica Van Roekel loves the upside-down life of following Jesus as she journeys to wholeness through brokenness. As an author, speaker, and worship leader, she uses her gifts and experiences to share God’s transformative power to rescue, restore, and renew. Jessica believes our personal histories don’t have to define our present or determine our future when we live fully surrendered to Jesus Christ. Her greatest desire is to see people live this “God-life” with all the power and grace that God provides.

On Sunday afternoons, you will find her with a cup of coffee in one hand, a good book in the other, and a sleeping orange kitty on her lap. She loves to connect with others and swap stories from the serious to the lighthearted. Jessica and her husband have two adult daughters spreading their wings, and two high schoolers, a son and daughter, fluttering their wings as they edge closer to the nest.

When we look at the pain rejection causes and see it as an opportunity to identify with Jesus, we’ve just been given a gift to reframe our view.

Rejection provides a hidden opportunity for spiritual maturity as we trust God in painful circumstances.

I elevated people’s opinions to a point that what they said, thought, or did became my standards—except each encounter left me feeling less than worthy and never approved.

With each rejection, I began fearing other people’s words and actions toward me, which only compounded the wounds rejection had created.

If we dwell on our hurts more than on God’s faithfulness, hope, and peace, we risk bringing to life old memories with new players, and the cycle continues.

The broken lens leads us into desert places where we chase after the mirages of perfection, control, and people pleasing.

God’s way of dealing with rejection gives us the ability to forgive, love, and overlook offense.

Fear of rejection takes me down a crazy path of perfection, control, and low self-worth.

When we look to others to prove our acceptability and they reject us, we end up with a twisted sense of self and perception of who God is.

When you surrender your way of thinking about rejection, you receive deliverance, devotion, and his sufficiency.
