When Christmas Isn’t Picture-Perfect: Stories of Kindness, Grief, and Hope with Author, Scott Kirk

Posted in

What if the Christmas story you need most isn’t wrapped in perfection—but found in the quiet mercy, kindness, and grace of ordinary people?

Scott Kirk, author of Twelve Stories for Christmas, for a heartfelt conversation about the kind of Christmas stories that reach beyond nostalgia and sentimentality into real life.

Scott’s collection is not built around picture-perfect holidays, flawless families, or tidy endings. Instead, these stories reflect real people carrying real burdens … grief, loneliness, regret, disappointment, longing, and the ache of empty chairs against the backdrop of the Christmas season.

Together, Shelly and Scott talk about why Christmas can be both beautiful and heavy, how small acts of kindness can soften a wounded heart, and why stories have a way of helping us see God’s grace in places we may have overlooked.

Scott shares the heart behind his first Christmas story, “Free Gloves,” and how one simple gift to family and friends grew into a collection of stories meant to be savored slowly. He also reflects on the dignity of every person, the call to be the hands and heart of Jesus, and the hope that God still sees us in our struggle.

This conversation is a tender reminder that kindness still matters, forgiveness is still possible, and the love of Christ often shows up through ordinary people in ordinary moments.

In this episode, Shelly and Scott Kirk talk about:

  • Why Scott chose to write Christmas stories that reflect real life, not a picture-perfect season
  • How grief, loneliness, and longing often surface during the holidays
  • The story behind Twelve Stories for Christmas and how it began as a gift
  • Why small acts of kindness can become deeply meaningful moments of grace
  • How stories can gently open hearts to the truth of God
  • Why Scott encourages readers to slow down and let each story settle
  • The importance of seeing the dignity in every person we meet
  •

Wonderful interview! I am currently re-reading the stories for the fourth time! Every read is new, heart-moving, and resets my kindness button! (A much needed thing in this complicated world!) Scott is as warm, deep, and layered as his stories! Get this book-bit be sure to get an extra one for a friend!

Wow!! Listening to Scott talk about his book I was struck by his thoughtfulness and depth of emotional connection he has with his writing. This interview did an outstanding job of revealing the heart of a great writer and having read Twelve Stories for Christmas I now understand even more where the depth and power of those stories come from. Thanks, Scott, for a great book!!
