About The Book

It is AD 60, Judea. When Julius Vagus, an officer in the Roman army, is given an order he can’t refuse, he doesn’t know it will forever change his life.

Told to arrest a controversial preacher of the Way who has been stirring up trouble in Jerusalem and the provinces, he finds himself guarding this religious man. His prisoner—a man formerly known as Saul, now going by Paul—is a radical proponent of Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified twenty-seven years earlier. Some flock to the man Paul, and some speak out against him. Then Julius is assigned to accompany his prisoner on a dangerous journey to Rome, he is in for an adventure he hadn’t planned on.

While Julius is on a dangerous overland and sea journey, he is also dealing with unresolved family issues. But primarily he is on a spiritual journey to a faith in Jesus Christ he doesn’t yet know he needs. Will Julius find restoration of the broken relationship with his father and family? Will he survive the tempest and shipwreck while delivering his notorious prisoner? Will he realize his need of forgiveness through Jesus Christ and find inner peace—even if it jeopardizes his standing in the Legion?

Follow Julius Vagus, the centurion, on a three-year journey to his future, and experience the life and times of Paul—and the power of the gospel—coming into sharp focus.

Quotes from ...A Centurion's Journey

Flavius reported to Julius. This groups beliefs are heresy and can’t be allowed. The leader said more, and Flavius interpreted. They are saying the other group is claiming a man named Jesus is the Jews promised Messiah.

I’m torn between being here and returning to the work yet to be done in Corinth—to all those I love in Asia and Greece. But I’m certain God is calling me to return to our brothers in Jerusalem for His purposes.

With the summer’s unbearably sweltering heat pounding day after day in the city trying to find sleep this late at night gives no comfort. The barrack’s sweat house would have been a cooler place to find sleep. Unable to find rest as the night hours grind on, the mind keeps wandering and replaying, “What brought me here?” The answer always seemed just vaguely out of reach like grasping at vapor and never taking hold.

Paul’s voice softened as he replied, “You must recognize that all of us are rebellious sinners to the God of Heaven and that we fall short of His glory. That rebellion brings us spiritual death, but God has given us a free gift of eternal life through the sacrifice of His Son our Lord Jesus Christ, who paid the price of our sin by dying on a cross in Judea. Now it is up to you. Are you ready to believe in your heart that Jesus is the Lord of your life and that God raised Him from the dead? If you genuinely believe this, you will be saved.”

Paul tore off a piece of unleavened bread and scooped a helping of the lamb stew. Satan is on the rampage to keep the gospel from reaching the souls Jesus is calling. And all along our path, we have met with resistance from those in control, but God has delivered to us those He is calling to be saved.

Julius frequently sat with Luke for hours, and Luke diligently prayed and wrote from his massive collection of water-stained notes gathered from his travels with Paul.
