Cooperative Rewrite

This editorial program calls for the editor to be heavily involved in reshaping and rewriting the book’s content and form. The editor does a quick read of the project and then consults with the author via Skype or phone to determine the author’s goals for the book. Depending on what the project requires, the editor then assists with organizing the material around the stated theme and desired outcome, working with the client to add to or remove content and then structure the composition, technical, and style elements effectively. Once the manuscript weaknesses are identified (according to the elements mentioned in a content edit description, the editor’s experience, and the author’s goals), the author provides any new content and needed research. The editor may also suggest the development of new material as needed. Author and editor then work together using a combination of content and substantive editing, with strong editorial participation in the rewriting, to restructure and rewrite the material. Author signs off on the revised book; editor then completes substantive edit. The book progresses to copy editor for a complete copy edit.

Content Coaching

The content coach (developmental editor) evaluates the completed manuscript with a “ten-foot overview,” as opposed to a line by line read and annotation, paying careful attention to ensure that all expected elements of a given genre have been presented in the book and have been developed as strongly as necessary for a quality read. Comments are made in the margins and corrections in the body of the manuscript itself using the Track Changes feature of Microsoft Word, so the author can see the concerns raised (and strengths mentioned) on the page.

An encouraging summary letter, outlining the coach’s findings, is sent to the author as well. In the letter, the coach may also discuss if the language is pitched at the right level; if terms need explaining. A discussion of all issues raised, and possible solution strategies, is offered in a coaching call following the return of the manuscript.

Line Edit – Under 75,000 Words

After the content is revised, the line editor goes through the manuscript page by page to improve the book’s overall content and composition as well as technical and stylistic elements. Line editing includes minimal rewriting (no new content additions) to focus or clarify ideas, argumentation, or plot; it also provides chapter, paragraph, or sentence restructuring as needed for clarity, concision, and pacing. The editor may query author if additional information is needed.

The editor makes sure there is good order and clear transitions as well as a consistent tone and style. He or she also ensures that the text is suitable for the intended audience and checks for redundancies and overused words/phrases, removing or replacing them as necessary.

Author Services — Copy Edit

Copy Editing seeks to:

  • Corrects spelling, punctuation, grammar, style, and usage errors.
  • Maintains internal consistency, both in content and formatting.
  • Identifies repetitions and awkward, unclear, or incomplete sentences.
  • Identifies ambiguous, incorrect, or libelous statements; ensure no breaches of copyright or trademark infringements exist.
  • Checks scripture entries.
  • Author is responsible for double-checking the accuracy of quotes and sources before signing off on the manuscript. This also includes copy editor review of author revised manuscript post-copyedit.

Word for Word Proofread After Typesetting

After typesetting, the proofreader checks for typos (spelling, punctuation, grammar, and usage) and formatting issues (widow/orphans, unusual hyphenation around the line and page breaks, extra spaces or lines, and consistency in headings, lists, numbering, etc.).

Work directly with a personal writing coach to determine your best route forward with the ideas and scribblings you have to work with.

This service offers you an opportunity to put your ideas down on paper and have a professional Christian writing coach/editor review your content and ideas and provide comprehensive written recommendations and suggestions about how to get your ideas into book form.

This document is then followed by an hour of email or phone feedback (author’s choice) and answers to your questions to gain clarity on how to get your idea into shape for the publishing process.


Author Coaching

Our professional editorial team will coach you through developing your idea and writing your book. Based on a targeted word count there will be a maximum number of coaching hours included in this price.

Calculated at 2500 words for every hour of coaching.

Example: 200 page manuscript would be 50,000 words or 20 hours of author coaching x $150/hr = $3,000.

90 Day Bootcamp Coaching – 9 hours

The coach will guide the client through each month’s writing and preparation and return the client’s submission with thorough, encouraging, and detailed notes. The following day, the coach and client will meet online to discuss the month’s work, to clarify anything that needs explanation, brainstorm solutions, and build the author’s confidence.

9 hours = 3 hours of coaching per month $170 per hour or $1,530


Children’s Book Edit & Picture Book Edit

  1. Title — A great title should be memorable, intriguing and match the tone of your story. Rhyme or alliterate, highlight the theme of your book, try and use the main characters name, is there a catchy refrain from your story that you could use? e.g., Time for Bed, Sleepy Head Be short snappy specific. Check to see if your title has been used before! Be immediate – get attention fast.
  2. Popular themes — Faith; Bedtime; Siblings/new baby; Mom/dad; Love; Hugs; Worries; Importance of kindness/sharing; Counting; Feelings; First experiences; Friendship; Pets; Growing up; Facing fears.
  3. Character — What is your character learning about him or herself, and God? What is unique about your character? Is your character’s name memorable? Do they have friends or family? What mood are they in? Will they appeal to boys or girls?
  4. Narrative plot — Your story should have: A beginning middle and end; A problem that needs to be overcome which might then lead to; Conflict; A resolution to the problem and satisfying ending; Not be a set up for other stories – a complete story.
  5. Setting — Setting helps a child become involved in the story; Setting can help set the mood of a story.
  6. Audience/Voice — Consider your audience – both children and adults who buy the books; Can your picture book have different layers to broaden its appeal – things that connect with both the child and the adult reader? Find your voice – individual, energetic, lively, engaging.
  7. Your book should be great to read aloud — Think about: Rhythm; Repetition; Rhyme; Wordplay; Voice; Flow; Onomatopoeia; Sensory words; Similes; Length; Emotion; Animal noises or other things children can say or do aloud as they read.
  8. Think about the relationship between words and pictures — Leave space for child to interpret story; Pictures can tell a part of the story that the words don’t; Pictures can add detail and humor; Pictures can tell a different story from the text; Think about page turns and pacing; You need to tell your story in limited words while increasing tension/suspense and varying rhythm; Creating excitement, drama, and impact; Creating a ‘big reveal’ moment
  9. The physical structure of a picture book contains — Full spreads, vignettes, panels, and frames (these can all be used to manipulate pace); 12 double spreads but it can stretch to 14 plus single pages.
  10. The ending – things to think about — Match tone of your ending to the tone of your book; Can you bring your story full circle? Could your ending have a surprise/twist? Try to have your end in sight when writing; a great ending can send the reader straight back to the beginning again.


Marketing Copy Package

A Marketing Copy Package consists of seven elements designed to attract potential readers and convert them into buyers.

Those elements are:

  1. Back Cover Copy — Sometimes called a “blurb” it is on the back of your book. It consists of between 150 and 250 words and is intended not only to inform potential readers of the book’s subject matter but also to draw them into the story by making them want to know more.
  2. Author Bio — This explains who the author is why they are qualified to write on the subject. It often provides an interesting tidbit or two about the author’s life. It consists of roughly 50 words and appears beneath the backcover copy and on the press release.
  3. Website Book Description — This is a one or two sentence summary of your book. It appears on retail websites as the first details a potential reader sees. Its purpose is to provide a quick glimpse into the book’s subject matter.
  4. Pull Quotes — These are “soundbite” quotes taken directly from the book. Identified and collected to showcase some of your best writing passages or most poignant points, they often appear on promotional graphics and in reviews and articles about your book.
  5. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Terminology — This is a collection of keywords and phrases that apply to the content and intended audience of your book. These terms are attached to your book’s listing, aiding search engines to connect an internet search of related terminology to your book’s title, making your book more visible to readers in your target audience.
  6. Press Release — A press release combines several of the previous elements and reframes them into a cohesive, media-ready announcement to promote a book’s release. It also directs recipients to the author’s social media outlets and provides contact information and instructions for obtaining advance reader copies (ARCs) for promotion or review.
  7. Suggested interview questions — compelling questions to supply the media when doing an interview is an integral part of your marketing package.
